Kelvin Berryman led the project team from GNS Science (NZ), Seismology
Research Centre (Australia), Dames & Moore Ltd (USA) and William Lettis & Associates (USA) to determine earthquake hazard in the Sydney region and
the appropriate earthquake loadings for the research nuclear facility.
Vietnam – New Zealand Dam Safety Project 2010-present
Kelvin led the GNS team in the joint partnership with Damwatch Engineering until retiring from GNS in 2020 and since then have acted as a principal advisor in this project for NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade. We have undertaken extensive training and assessment of dam safety in Vietnam – from flood modelling to risk to community-based DRM.
National Disaster Resilience Strategy – NZ Government 2017-2019
Kelvin was a member of the consultative group that assisted in the development of this national strategy.
Wellington Lifelines Regional Resilience Project 2017-2019
Kelvin was one of three initiators and steering group member of the project to identify strategic infrastructure investment in Wellington to increase resilience. The project identified the priority and the sequence of investments that could realise a high rate of return for the national economy, community resilience and capital expenditure
Science advice for the recovery from the Canterbury earthquakes 2010-2016
In my role as Director of the Natural Hazards Research Platform I was responsible for coordinating, interpreting and communicating research knowledge across earthquake science, engineering, planning and social science in support of recovery of the impacted region. This involved extensive engagement with government ministers, government agencies, elected officials, and recovery agencies including the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, Canterbury Earthquake Royal Commission and the insurance industry.
